Roasted Butternut Squash Purée

Roasted Butternut Squash Purée:

The simplicity of a great roasted Butternut Squash Purée lies in its ability to highlight the squash’s natural sweetness and velvety texture. I adore the texture and sweetness of roasted butternut squash, and I believe it’s easy to overseason the purée. Salt and pepper are all that’s needed to enhance the squash’s flavor; overcomplicating the seasoning can mask its delicate sweetness.

Enhance with Butter and Cream (Optional):

A whisper of butter and cream can elevate the purée’s richness and flavor. I love adding a touch of butter and a little cream, but it’s not necessary. The squash’s inherent sweetness and velvety texture can truly shine on their own. For a vegetarian or vegan-friendly option, a drizzle of high-quality extra virgin olive oil can add a delightful complexity.

Butternut Squash Tips:

  • Roast the squash until it is very tender: This will make it easier to purée and will result in a smoother purée
  • Choose a good squash: Look for a squash that is firm and heavy for its size. Avoid squash with soft spots or blemishes.
  • Roast the squash until it is very tender: This will make it easier to purée and will result in a smoother purée.
  • Don’t over-process the purée: Over-processing can make the purée gluey.
  • You can freeze butternut squash puree for later use

A Personal Perspective on the “Better for You” Trend:

Let’s face it: we’re all trying to be better versions of ourselves. We’re swapping sugary sodas for sparkling water, greasy fast food for leafy greens, and avoiding anything that would make a dietitian cringe.

I never thought of “Better for You” as a passing trend. We used that description years ago because people were tired of the overused “healthy food” slogan.

However, “Better for You” is now a major trend in the food and beverage industry.

I’ve started cooking at home, experimenting with new recipes, and exploring local farmers’ markets for fresh, seasonal produce. I’ve also cut back on processed foods and sugary drinks, opting for healthier alternatives like smoothies, herbal tea, and water.

Butternut squash has been cultivated for centuries. However, its recent surge in popularity is undoubtedly fueled by a growing awareness of the connection between diet and well-being. Consumers are increasingly seeking ingredients with functional food, and butternut squash fits this trend perfectly with its rich nutrient profile.

By “better for you” ingredients, I mean foods and ingredients that are minimally processed, closer to their natural state, and healthier than highly processed foods. In a nutshell, I’m talking about foods and ingredients that are clean, seasonal, and minimally processed.
